Summary
Following a decade of peace, the 1930s brings hard times to the country. Men ride the rails in search of jobs, and shantytowns called Hoovervilles spring up across the landscape. The Stuart farm in the Ozarks is failing. Even Lylah in the film industry feels the strain. Changes rock the Sutarts, testing their faith in God and drawing them together in unexpected ways. The younger members of the Stuart clan find themselves in unfamiliar places, from a hobo jungle in an Illinois city to the glitter of a Hollywood movie set. Needing work, several head for Oklahoma, where Uncle Peter single-handedly attempts to build an oil well. In his determination, he crosses the powerful and ruthless Kingman Oil Company--with dangerous results. Will the lean years of the Great Depression shatter the family's dreams?
