Summary
Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease that can occur at any time of life, although it does first appear more commonly in younger people. Unlike type 2 diabetes, it is not a lifestyle related condition and cannot be prevented through healthy eating and exercise. Presently, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Approximately 10-15% of all people with diabetes have type 1. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to regulate a person¹s blood glucose levels. This is why people who have this condition must administer insulin manually, either through a pump or regular injections. In these ŒSpeaking from Experience¹ video clips, six people living with type 1 diabetes and one partner discuss the ways in which this condition has impacted on various aspects of their life. They share the ways that they manage the condition, as well as some of the challenges they have faced. It was produced in partnership with Diabetes Australia VIC
