Summary
KOORIES AND COPS outlines the historical relationship between police and Aboriginal communities. It explains how police played a crucial role in enforcing white colonial laws which led to Aboriginal dispossession and family dispersal. The production of KOORIES AND COPS is one aspect of a strategy for police and community to work towards overcoming the legacy of mutual distrust. "From the outset we didn't want a film that white-washed the police. ... We wanted to be able to tell young police officers that up until 1969 police did, as a result of government policy, take children from their parents. Police were the visible arm of government and quite properly many Aboriginal people feared the police." - Chief Inspector Denis Cairns, Officer in Charge, Aboriginal Affairs, Victoria Police. Jointly funded by the Victorian Police and Film Victoria as part of an improved cross-cultural awareness campaign, KOORIES AND COPS is an excellent resource which can be used in education and community groups to provide an understanding of the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities. Directed by Daryl Dellora. Produced by Sue Maslin
