Summary
Kelsey Freeman and Beth Alvarado first met over coffee to talk about "Writing While White." Both of their then-forthcoming books, "No Option But North" (immersive creative nonfiction) and "Jillian in the Borderlands" (fabulist fictional tales) take place in Mexico and the US Borderlands. Alvarado and Freeman discuss the challenges of writing about race in a racialized society like the US, where readers are still largely assumed to be white; how to meet those challenges, both in terms of process and craft; what happens if one fails; and why it is important to make the attempt to write about race
