Summary
A profile of Adriana Lisboa, Brazilian author,℗¡winner of the Jose Saramago Award for her novel℗¡Symphony in White, the Moinho Santista Award, and the Outstanding Newcomer of the Year Award from the National Foundation of Books for Children and Youths.℗¡ Adriana Lisboa grew up in Laranjeiras where her family still resides in the house her grandfather built more than fifty years ago. By all means, Lisboa is a true Carioca, a native of Rio de Janeiro. This categorical identity hasn't deterred the author's unrelenting pursuit for what laid beneath or beyond. At first it was life beneath the Brazilian surf that caught her attention. She would later draw inspiration other forms of alien-life. In Lisboa's universe, the other encompasses mollusks under the sea, Muslims in Paris, Communist guerrilla-warriors in Amazonia, Brazilians in North America, and even a golden retriever in a Kyoto's street corner. Lisboa challenges the same cultural traditions that have ruled a generation of writers from Latin America as she wonders in search of new answers in a labyrinth that seemed engineered by Octavio Paz twenty years before her birth. "Jose Saramago labeled Lisboa "a writer for the future". I couldn't disagree more: The Carioca is clearly a voice deeply rooted in the present, which has come to reformulate the past with a unique perspective of the future." - Eduardo Montes-Bradley, Charlottesville, VA.
