Summary
Fraser Island was listed as a World Heritage Area in 1992 for its outstanding natural heritage values. This program takes viewers on a trip to the World's largest sand island, with half the World's perched dune lakes and the planet's only rainforest growing on sand. The landscapes and ecosystems are shown, including the purest breed of dingoes seen in Australia. Reasons for the World Heritage listing and ways of protecting the natural wonders are discussed as well as environmental threats and management. Some half a million tourists visit each year and their vehicles on the sand roads plus visits to lakes and forests have impacts on the island. Measures are even being taken to reduce interaction of visitors and dingoes as changes in dingo behaviour have occurred. Dingoes, other animals and the natural environment are also the main tourist attractions. Conserving World Heritage values and maintaining a tourist industry that relies on Fraser Island are issues that are constant challenges. An AGTA 2010 award winning program. --Kanopy
