Summary
This historical drama is about Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes, considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Immensely successful in his lifetime, Goya is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the Moderns. ..The story opens with a young girl, Rosarita (Jaclyn Blumas), looking for a new home where her mother, Leocadia (Shannon Lawson), can work as a housekeeper. A run-in with Francisco de Goya (Cedric Smith) turns out to be a blessing. Enchanted by Rosarita's artistic talent, Goya agrees to hire her mother. A visit to the royal palace to gather Goya's belongings turns disastrous when he is questioned about his art by the king's Inquisitor Garcini (Jan Filips). Rescued by Goya's haughty son, Javier (Robert Bockstael), Goya and his new companions set out for his humble home in the country. When Goya turns gravely ill, it is Rosarita who convinces him to keep fighting. Recovered and with newfound inspiration, Goya begins an ambitious work directly on the walls of his dining room, the famous "Black Paintings."..The film won the "Top 10 Award" from the Writer's Guild of Canada
