Summary
The glaciers of the Oregon Cascades are crucial for downstream life, supplying much-needed water during the late summer for irrigation, drinking, and fish survival. We look at the U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps and believe we know where Oregon's glaciers are and how many exist. But this is not the case. Dr. Anders Carlson discusses new findings by the Oregon Glaciers Institute's first comprehensive census of glaciers in Oregon. Much mystery remains in the high Cascades that arises from a near complete lack of study since the 1930s. Many glaciers are now gone. Others existed and vanished in our lifetime without any mention on a map or report. And even a new glacier was discovered. Dr. Carlson shows how these mysteries actually make sense--and the true mystery was their apparent absence
